What is THE FIRST SLAM DUNK about?

THE FIRST SLAM DUNK is an anime film animated by Toei Animation, adapted from a manga. It was released in December 3, 2022. AniList classifies it as sports.

Shohoku's “speedster” and point guard, Ryota Miyagi, always plays with brains and lightning speed, running circles around his opponents while feigning composure. Born and raised in Okinawa, Ryota had a brother who was three years older. Following in the footsteps of his older brother, who was a famous local player from a young age, Ryota also became addicted to basketball.

In his second year of high school, Ryota plays with the Shohoku High School basketball team along with Sakuragi, Rukawa, Akagi, and Mitsui as they take the stage at the Inter-High School National Championship. And now, they are on the brink of challenging the reigning champions, Sannoh Kogyo High School.

Main characters

Characters AniList lists in a main role, with spoiler-free notes.

  • Ryouta Miyagi 宮城リョータ

    Main character

He joined the basketball team because of his love for the game in the first place. But soon it seems that he is also playing for the love of his life Ayako, the team manager. Although Ryonan's coach asked him to join the Ryonan Basketball Team, Miyagi chose for Shohoku because of Anzai.

    Japanese voice: Shuugo Nakamura

  • Hanamichi Sakuragi 桜木花道

    Main character

At the beginning, Sakuragi was a slacker, always trying to ask girls out but getting constantly rejected (the 50th rejection occurring at the start of the series). He then met Akagi Haruko, with whom he fell in love immediately. This passion led to him joining the Shohoku basketball team.

    Japanese voice: Subaru Kimura

  • Kaede Rukawa 流川楓

    Main character

Kaede Rukawa is Sakuragi's rival as well as almost his opposite; he is attractive to girls, skilled at basketball, and very cold and unfeeling. The only traits they share are that they are not academically inclined and good fighters. He regards Sakuragi as an idiot and both normally fight.

    Japanese voice: Shinichirou Kamio

  • Hisashi Mitsui 三井寿

    Main character

Before joining Shohoku, Mitsui Hisashi was an MVP for Takeishi Junior High. Japanese voice: Jun Kasama

  • Takenori Akagi 赤木剛憲

    Main character

Takenori Akagi is the captain of the Shohoku basketball team and Haruko's older brother. Despite at first not thinking too much of Sakuragi (who addresses him as "Gori" for gorilla due to his immense physical presence), he actually realizes Sakuragi's potential as a basketball player.

    Japanese voice: Kenta Miyake

Supporting characters

    Japanese voice: Asami Seto

  • Kiminobu Kogure 木暮公延

    Supporting character

Kiminobu Kogure is Shohoku's vice-captain and a good friend to Akagi and Mitsui. Japanese voice: Katsuhisa Houki

  • Norio Hotta 堀田徳男

    Supporting character

Norio Hotta is the leader of a gang of fellow Third Year students who are the reigning delinquents at Shohoku. Sakuragi catches his attention on the first day of school when he gets into an altercation with two of his cronies, resulting in his issuing a direct challenge to Sakuragi by interrupting one of his classes.

    Japanese voice: Tetsu Inada

  • Eiji Sawakita 沢北栄治

    Supporting character

Eiji Sawakita is considered Japan's No.1 High School Player and is the ace of Sannoh. Unlike many other characters who are extremely skilled as he is, he has a goofy attitude sometimes and has comical moments of extreme shock when an opponent does something impressive.
