What is Fruits Basket Season 2 about?

Fruits Basket Season 2 is a TV anime series of 25 episodes animated by TMS Entertainment, adapted from a manga. It aired from April 7, 2020 to September 22, 2020. AniList classifies it as comedy, drama, psychological and romance. It continues from Fruits Basket (2019), which is worth watching first.

A year has passed since Tohru Honda began living in the Souma residence, and she has since created stronger relationships with its inhabitants Shigure, Kyou, and Yuki. She has also grown closer to the rest of the Souma family and has become familiar with their ancestral secret, having helped them with many of their personal issues. The closer Tohru gets, however, the more she begins to realize that their secret holds a darker truth than she first presumed.

Summer is approaching and Tohru is invited to spend her days with the Soumas, mainly Kyou and Yuki. Tohru wishes for an easy-going vacation, but her close relationships with the two boys and the rest of the Soumas may prove to cause trouble. As they grow more intimate, their carefree time together is hindered by older hardships and feelings from the past that begin to resurface. The Eternal Banquet also dawns on the members of the zodiac, and they must tend to their duties alongside the unnerving head of the family, Akito Souma.

With the banquet approaching and a plethora of feelings to be solved, will Tohru's life with the Soumas remain peaceful, or will she find herself in a situation from which she cannot escape?

Main characters

Characters AniList lists in a main role, with spoiler-free notes.

  • Shigure Souma 草摩紫呉

    Main character

Shigure transforms into the dog of the Chinese Zodiac whenever he is hugged by the opposite gender or his body comes under a great deal of stress. Shigure is one of the oldest members of the Soma family. He is laid-back and anything but solemn.

    Japanese voice: Yuuichi Nakamura

  • Tooru Honda 本田透

    Main character

A kind hearted orphaned high school student who, at the start of the story, begins living in a tent. She is then found by Shigure and Yuki, who offer to take her in in exchange for housekeeping. She loves to cook and describes herself as an excellent housekeeper.

    Japanese voice: Manaka Iwami

  • Yuki Souma 草摩由希

    Main character

Known as "The Prince" or "Prince Yuki" at school, Yuki is very pretty and refined, and has many admirers at school, but has a hard time being social. He wishes that he could be with people as friends, rather than admired and worshiped from afar.

    Japanese voice: Nobunaga Shimazaki

  • Kyou Souma 草摩夾

    Main character

Kyo is a stubborn, hot-headed boy. He is easily provoked and angered in any situation. As with most of the Soma clan, Kyo is cursed with becoming an animal of the Zodiac when hugged by someone of the opposite gender.

    Japanese voice: Yuuma Uchida

Supporting characters

  • Kagura Souma 草摩楽羅

    Supporting character

She has been in love with Kyo since they were young, although she doesn't know that Kyo is in love with her friend, Tohru Honda. Because of her "pity" of him as a child, when he was all alone because he carried the curse of the cat, she played with and took care of him.

    Japanese voice: Rie Kugimiya

  • Momiji Souma 草摩紅葉

    Supporting character

A cute and seemingly happy teenager with a sad family life that he hides behind his cheery demeanor. His endless whining and crying often annoys Kyo. He is older than he looks, much to Tohru's surprise, he is only 1 year younger than Yuki, and Kyo, the same age as Hatsuharu.

    Japanese voice: Megumi Han

  • Hatori Souma 草摩はとり

    Supporting character

The dragon of the Zodiac and the private doctor to the Soma clan. Hatori is serious and is often without a sense of humor. It's his job to erase the memories of those who discover the Soma clan secret, though it is not entirely clear if this is simply a form of hypnosis or more of a supernatural power.

    Japanese voice: Kazuyuki Okitsu

  • Hatsuharu Souma 草摩潑春

    Supporting character

The ox of the Zodiac, Haru has something of a Yin and Yang personality related to the Ox's personality. He is usually calm, placid, and otherwise an all-around nice guy, but can be goaded into "stampeding", where he's edgy and mean and slightly oversexed.

    Japanese voice: Makoto Furukawa

  • Ayame Souma 草摩綾女

    Supporting character

The snake of the zodiac, and big brother to Yuki, Ayame is vivacious, garrulous, and has a knack for making Yuki and Kyo angry. He runs a business that makes women's clothing, which men apparently wear as well, and he often wears women's clothing himself.

    Japanese voice: Takahiro Sakurai

  • Kisa Souma 草摩杞紗

    Supporting character

She is very shy, cute, and withdrawn, largely because her classmates harass and ostracize her due to her naturally orange hair, a side effect of her curse of the tiger. In Japanese society, non-black hair is considered "disrespectful" or "unnatural" and being made fun of for this reason is really quite normal.

    Japanese voice: Reina Ueda

  • Hiro Souma 草摩燈路

    Supporting character

Hiro is a very intelligent but verbally aggressive and smart-mouthed sophist. He is in love with Kisa, and resents Tohru because she unwittingly monopolizes Kisa's time and attention.

    Japanese voice: You Taichi

  • Ritsu Souma 草摩利津

    Supporting character

As far back as he could remember, his parents always had to apologize for everything he did, so he is very unsure of himself. He feels that every day, he is robbing the world of its air by breathing.

    Japanese voice: Kengo Kawanishi

  • Akito Souma 草摩慊人

    Supporting character

Akito is the head of the Souma clan and very frail. He often runs fevers and rarely walks out of the main house other than to greet some of the Zodiac members, such as Yuki and Shigure, that live in the outside world.

    Japanese voice: Maaya Sakamoto

  • Arisa Uotani 魚谷ありさ

    Supporting character

Arisa is a former gang member (a yankee: a Japanese version of the American "gangster thug" image) and has been one of Tohru's closest friends since Tohru's mother helped her escape from the gang (called "The Ladies") when she wanted to leave it.

    Japanese voice: Atsumi Tanezaki

  • Saki Hanajima 花島咲

    Supporting character

Saki is a psychic girl with a goth-like appearance who has the ability to sense people's "auras" and send out electric waves (denpa in Japanese). Much like Arisa, Saki is extremely protective of Tohru, who was the first person in school who had truly accepted her.

    Japanese voice: Satomi Satou

  • Kazuma Souma 草摩藉真

    Supporting character

When he was a child, Kazuma was mean to his grandfather, who was then the member of the Soma family possessed by the cat of the Chinese Zodiac, during their first and only meeting simply because his grandfather was cursed by the cat.

    Japanese voice: Toshiyuki Morikawa
