What is ARIA The ORIGINATION about?

ARIA The ORIGINATION is a TV anime series of 13 episodes animated by Hal Film Maker, adapted from a manga. It aired from January 8, 2008 to April 1, 2008. AniList classifies it as fantasy, science fiction and slice of life. It continues from ARIA The OVA ~ARIETTA~, which is worth watching first.

In Neo Venezia, Akari, Aika, and Alice continue to work diligently toward the day they become full-fledged Prima Undine (a professional tour guide gondolier). The girls have come far since they began their training, and they are slowly forming their own distinctive styles as tour guides for the city.

On the long journey towards their goal, the girls have relied on the advice of their seniors from their respective companies: the patient and understanding Alicia from Aria Company, the strict and proper Akira from Himeya Company, and the clumsy yet caring Athena from Orange Planet Company.

Will the girls be able to blend the advice from their mentors with their personally acquired knowledge of Neo Venezia to become praiseworthy Prima Undines?

Welcome once more to Neo Venezia; the city that personifies warmth and tranquility.

Main characters

Characters AniList lists in a main role, with spoiler-free notes.

  • Akari Mizunashi 水無灯里

    Main character

A native of Man-Home, Akari is a happy and easy-going person, who we rarely see angry or upset, a quality which she shares with her supervisor. She is best described as a romantic and seems to find enjoyment in things or events that other people might think humdrum and mundane.

    Japanese voice: Erino Hazuki

  • Alicia Florence アリシア・フローレンス

    Main character

The only other undine with Aria Company, Alicia is one of the Three Water Fairies of Neo-Venezia, known by the title "Snow White". At the start of the series, she is the most popular undine in the city, noted especially for her graceful rowing style. She was promoted to Prima at 15, the youngest ever to do so.

    Japanese voice: Sayaka Oohara

  • Aika Granzchesta 藍華・S・グランチェスタ

    Main character

The first friend Akari ever made on Aqua, Aika is an undine for Himeya, the oldest and currently second-ranking water-guide company in Neo-Venezia.

    Japanese voice: Chiwa Saitou

  • Akira Ferrari 晃・E・フェラーリ

    Main character

Akira is one of Neo Venezia's three Water Fairies, and is Aika's supervisor with the Himeya company. She is nicknamed the Demon Instructor for her strict training regimen as well as her loud and brusque personality.

    Japanese voice: Junko Minagawa

  • Alice Carroll アリス・キャロル

    Main character

A girl introduced in volume 3, Alice is a trainee for Orange Planet, a company who currently holds the first place in the water guide business. She first appears as a very standoffish, snotty young girl; however, exposure to Akari's mood begins to lighten her up as the series progresses.

    Japanese voice: Ryou Hirohashi

  • Athena Glory アテナ・グローリィ

    Main character

The third "Water Fairy", who works for Orange Planet and acts as Alice's mentor. She tends to be a total airhead who does not really pay attention to anything (in the anime, she once rowed under a bridge and forgot to duck), but genuinely cares about Alice.

    Japanese voice: Tomoko Kawakami

  • Aria Pokoteng アリア

    Main character

Amongst the undine companies, it's a tradition to keep a blue-eyed cat (breed is not a problem here) as mascot for good luck. President Aria is the Aria Company's mascot, a male Aqua breed feline (common trait are bigger than Earth breed and human-level intelligence). He is smart enough to understand human speech.

    Japanese voice: Chinami Nishimura

Supporting characters

  • Maa まぁ

    Supporting character

Maa is one of the four major cats in the Aria storyline was adopted as a stray by Alice in the first season. She named her "Maa-kun" because all the cat said was "Maa".

    Japanese voice: Akeno Watanabe

  • Akatsuki Izumo 出雲暁

    Supporting character

Akari's first customer as a Single. He is a tall, impatient young man who calls Akari "Pigtails" (momiko) to tease her. He works as an apprentice Salamander, someone who helps maintain Aqua's climate in the floating buildings that tethered overhead.

    Japanese voice: Hirofumi Nojima

  • Akino Ametsuchi 天地秋乃

    Supporting character

A famous and longest-serving Prima undine, who started Aria company with Aria Pokoteng after realizing she was missing too much of life as Himeya's top ace. She was Prima undine for 30 years and mentor to Alicia, her last disciple, to whom she left the company on her retirement.

    Japanese voice: Yoshiko Matsuo

  • Hime Granzchesta 姫・M・グランチェスタ

    Supporting character

President of Himeya Company, a small, delicate, black female cat from Manhome. She is the target of President Aria's obvious crush (and sometimes lack of manners), wherein she makes it a point to ignore him for the most part.

    Japanese voice: Kaori Mizuhashi

  • Ai Aino 愛野アイ

    Supporting character

A girl from Man-home. Initially, Ai came to Aqua to explore in a rather negative attitude because her elder sister often boasted to her how good Aqua is, only to find that it was boring. However, meeting & befriending Akari & friends changed Ai's mindset.

    Japanese voice: Kaori Mizuhashi

  • Udo Ayanokouji the 51st ウッデイー

    Supporting character

Woody is a Sylph. His job is to deliver packages and other goods to people in Neo-Venezia, or delivering people's treasured feelings as he called it. He loves 'swimming' through the sky, and prefers his nickname because it's less formal than his actual name.

    Japanese voice: Yuuji Ueda

  • Albert Pitt アルバート・ピット

    Supporting character

Al is an apprentice gnome (a person that maintains the gravity levels if Aqua to match that of Man-Home). Despite his youthful looks and short stature, he is actually nineteen, though he has the tendency to crack "old guy jokes", which irritates Aika to no end whenever she's present.

    Japanese voice: Akeno Watanabe

  • Atora Monteverdi アトラ・モンテヴェルディ

    Supporting character

An Undine from Orange Planet who often works special traghetto gondolas as she strives to become a Prima Undine. Like Anzu, she failed her Prima exam, but unlike Anzu, she didn't have the courage to try again, arguing that she felt the Orange Planet examineer is too strict and wouldn't give them a chance.

    Japanese voice: Houko Kuwashima

  • Anzu Yumeno 夢野杏

    Supporting character

An Undine from Orange Planet who often works special traghetto gondolas as she strives to become a Prima Undine. She's fairly quiet, and tends to fall into light depression spells due to her repeated attempts at undertaking the Prima exams and failing them each time.

    Japanese voice: Kana Asumi

  • Ayumi Jasmine あゆみ・K・ジャスミン

    Supporting character

An Undine from Himeya whose only goal as an Undine is to remain a Single and continue to row traghetto gondolas. Ayumi has a very open and direct personality, easily striking up conversations with the traghetto passengers. (Even being on a first-name basis with some of them.)

    Japanese voice: Ryouko Shiraishi

  • Arata Izumo 出雲新太

    Supporting character

Akatsuki's older brother, who works in the trading business and is known to travel back and forth between Aqua and Man-Home. He considers himself to be among the elite, and enjoys antagonizing his brother from time to time when they meet.

    Japanese voice: Hisao Egawa

  • Namihei Anno 庵野波平

    Supporting character

He is one of the postmen working on planet Aqua. He was the first person Akari Mizunashi met when she came to the planet, and also the one who brought her then sleeping self over to Aria company when he learned she would start working there.

    Japanese voice: Motomu Kiyokawa
